I love my job but hate the fucking politics

There is a position open in my department. The position would be a promotion & $10K/year for me. I am qualified & have expressed interest. There is a man in my department that is also qualified & has also expressed interest. We have agreed that if either one of us was to get this job there would be no hard feelings. There really wouldn't be--we have a respect for each other that makes me think that either one of us would be happy for the one that got it.

IF we had been given an opportunity to apply. We weren't.

Scott was told yesterday that our department head made a by-name request to hire a man that is retiring from the AF.

We are pissed.

The person that made this decision has not worked in our department for more than 2 days. She is currently in Iraq & did this all via email correspondence with the assistance that were left behind.

Brenda said that she doesn't know why the decision was made to do this. I told her that I don't care why she did it. What was done shows a clear indication that we are not appreciated & that our morale doesn't matter to this person.

We are taking this to the clinic commander & to the union. We're not going to allow this to happen without a fight.

Isn't this illegal? Isn't the government required to post most jobs and go through a specific search process?

That stinks! I'm with Rose: not only do you and Scott deserve better, the people you serve deserve better! The work you do is too important for this kind of decision to be made on the basis of politics!
